The Client
BHP Billiton, one of the largest mining companies in the world, headquartered in Australia.
The Need
When a company operates on a stage this big, particularly in the natural resources sector, it presents the opportunity to be a true leader in Reconciliation. Mokwateh helped create a plan for BHP to step into this leadership opportunity, starting with the Nations proximate to their remote Saskatchewan mine sites and radiating outward to urban Saskatoon and the national landscape beyond. A defining feature of the project was the necessity to coordinate among a wide variety of internal stakeholders given the global nature of the client.
The Bespoke Solution
Our team worked across time zones and navigated local, national, North American, and global strategies to develop a plan that would be embraced and implemented seamlessly. The output was an Indigenous Peoples Participation Plan for BHP that was grounded in meaning and impact. We ensured this by facilitating workshops and one-on-one interviews with: local Chief and Council, thought leaders, subject matter experts, the urban Indigenous community, and leadership teams of Indigenous not-for-profits. It was set up so that the BHP team participated in the discussions and were able to directly learn from community perspectives.
The Bridge We Built
Mokwateh married strategic research with operational ease to shape a relevant local strategy for BHP. We created a framework for this global leader to have a powerful impact in Canada’s Indigenous Economy.
